1. What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website stores on your device so it can recognise you next time. Some last only until you close the tab; others stay for months.

“Cookies” here is shorthand for a few similar technologies that do much the same job: local storage, which keeps data in your browser; pixels and tags, which are tiny invisible images that report back when a page loads; and device identifiers.

This policy sits alongside our Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions. The Privacy Policy explains what we do with the data these tools collect; this page explains the tools themselves.

2. The three kinds we use

Essential

Always on

These keep the site working. They hold your session open, remember which question you are on, carry your email through to checkout, and protect against fraudulent requests. Without them the test cannot run, so they are set automatically and cannot be switched off.

Analytics

Optional

These count visits, show us which pages people leave from, and record errors so we can fix them. The picture they give us is aggregate — how a thousand people behave, not what you personally did.

Advertising

Optional

These come from the platforms we advertise on. They tell those platforms whether someone who clicked an ad went on to take the test or subscribe, which is how we work out which ads are worth paying for. They also let us avoid showing ads to people who have already signed up.

The platforms use this for their own purposes as well as ours, which is why California law treats it as sharing. Section 9 of our Privacy Policy explains how to opt out.

Third-party durations are set by those companies and can change without notice from us. Where a provider offers its own privacy information, it will be more current than this table for their cookies specifically.

4. Choosing what runs

When you first arrive, we ask which optional categories you want to allow. Essential cookies are set regardless, because the site does not function without them. Analytics and advertising cookies run only if you say yes.

You can change your mind at any time, and your choice is remembered for twelve months before we ask again.

We honour Global Privacy Control. If your browser or an extension sends that signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of advertising cookies and act on it without asking.

Declining optional cookies has no effect on the test, your score, your certificate, or your subscription. The only thing you lose is that we see less about how the site is performing.

5. Turning cookies off in your browser

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies directly, which overrides any choice made on our site. Be aware that blocking essential cookies will stop parts of the test from working.

Deleting cookies already stored does not stop new ones being set on your next visit. To prevent that, change the browser setting rather than clearing the history.

You can also opt out of interest-based advertising across many companies at once through the Digital Advertising Alliance or the Network Advertising Initiative.

6. Managing them on a phone

Mobile devices have their own controls that sit above the browser:

  • iPhone and iPad: Settings › Apps › Safari › Advanced for cookies, and Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking to stop apps requesting to track you. Apple's guide has the details.
  • Android: Chrome › Settings › Site settings › Cookies, and Settings › Google › Ads to reset or delete your advertising ID. Google's guide covers it.

7. Changes to this policy

We update this page when we add or remove a tool. The date at the top tells you when that last happened. If a change means we start collecting something materially different, we will ask for your consent again rather than relying on a choice you made under the old version.
